Synthetic Vinegar vs Naturally Fermented Vinegar
The bottle says “vinegar”. But one is food that fermented; the other is an industrial chemical that got diluted. Both are technically vegetarian — only one was ever food.

Verdict: A pickle preserved in synthetic acid is not the achaar your grandmother made. Pay the extra ₹60 — for pickling, salads and health tonics, use only naturally fermented vinegar.

Gelatin vs Agar-Agar & Pectin
The wobble in jelly, the chew in gummies, the shell of your capsule — very often gelatin. Most people who eat it daily have never been told what it is.

Verdict: There is no culinary job gelatin does that agar or pectin cannot. Check every gummy, jelly and capsule — and swap without compromise.

Animal-Rennet Cheese vs Vegetarian Cheese & Paneer
Cheese needs an enzyme to set. Where that enzyme comes from decides whether your “vegetarian” pizza actually is.

Verdict: In India you’re mostly safe; with imports, “enzymes” of unnamed origin means assume animal rennet. Paneer remains the world’s most honest cheese.

Fish Oil vs Algal Omega-3

Verdict: If a red or pink product doesn’t name its colour source, ask. E120 is one of the most common accidental non-veg ingredients in the world.

Every colour a factory makes, a plant already made first. One route runs through petroleum and crushed insects; the other runs through your spice box. Both can end up the same shade of red — only one was ever food.

Verdict: If a colour doesn’t name a plant, treat it as synthetic or insect until proven otherwise. And remember the illegal ones — metanil yellow, lead chromate, Sudan dyes, rhodamine B, malachite green — that appear on loose, unbranded food with no label at all.

Vanaspati & Refined Oils vs Cold-Pressed Oil & Pure Ghee
The fat you cook in is the fat you become. Here “vegetarian” is not the question — “was this made by pressing a seed, or by a chemical plant?” is.

Verdict: Vanaspati wearing the word “ghee” is one of the oldest tricks in the market. Read the ingredients, not the picture on the tin — real ghee lists one thing, and cold-pressed oil names its seed.

Analogue “Paneer” vs Real Milk Paneer
A curious modern fake: a white block that looks like paneer but has barely met a cow. It isn’t “non-veg” — it’s something worse for a pure kitchen, a synthetic imitation of real food.

Synthetic Vanilla (Vanillin) vs Natural Vanilla
Most “vanilla” you have tasted never came near the orchid. Synthetic vanillin is vegetarian — but it is a single lab-made molecule standing in for a pod with hundreds.

Sugar-Syrup “Honey” vs Raw Honey & Plant Syrups
Two separate questions meet in the honey jar. Is it real, or is it sugar syrup pretending? And — for those who avoid all animal products — is honey even something you want at all? Here are both answers.

Refined Free-Flow Salt vs Rock & Sea Salt
A smaller swap, but a true one to the same principle: the less a food is stripped and treated, the closer it stays to what it was.

Verdict: Not a veg-vs-non-veg question — a natural-vs-industrial one. Keep rock or sea salt in the kitchen for the same reason you keep whole spices: it is closer to the source.
